Here's a recent item from Reuters you'll find interesting:
"The US Education Department has issued guidance urging schools to stop what it calls 'racial balancing' in student discipline policies, prompting concerns that the Trump administration is making it harder to address longstanding racial disparities in school discipline."
Ah yes, "racial disparities," which are always presumed to have their origins in wickedness and hate, and which must be stamped out, because teachers -- among the most left-wing demographics in the country, are evidently disciplining black students solely because they are black and for no other reason.
If after seven or eight decades of "civil rights" agitation even the most left-wing American profession is still going to be accused of "racism," what is the point?
And yet, as the late Stephan Thernstrom of Harvard pointed out, black teachers are more likely to discipline black students than white teachers are, so there goes the "racism" theory.
In precisely this context, my friend Auron MacIntyre recently shared his experiences as a schoolteacher under less than ideal conditions. Since everyone is taught to be a bean counter and be obsessed with "balancing," every standard of decency and excellence has to be sacrificed.
Thus Auron:
I taught at a majority minority school where suspending students was functionally banned.
The logic was that the school district suspended too many minority students, and since almost all of our students were "minorities" any suspensions from our school would make the overall district numbers look very bad.
The result was a student body who knew there were no penalties for their behavior. One principal was sent to the hospital after being knocked out trying to break up a fight in the cafeteria. A teacher was placed in the mail room because he tried to stop a fight in his classroom, and the parent of one of the students accused him of racism.
After multiple prison-riot style fights broke out, with dozens of students beating each other, footage finally made it to local news stations and the district panicked.
We were once again allowed to suspend students and the violence disappeared.
The discipline got so much better that we were actually able to teach in classrooms again -- no more students telling teachers to go f*** themselves or storming out of the class when they were told to do their work.
Students could actually learn again, grades went up, everything improved.
But we were driving up the district's number, too many minority students were being suspended, and they ended the solution that had been radically successful.
The school went back to being a disaster, and I escaped to a better school where discipline was almost never an issue.
No bonus points for guessing what the shift in demographics looked like.
On a happier note, the Tom Woods Cruise, which took place last week, exceeded expectations: everyone had a blast, and we agreed it's a shame that there won't be any more Tom Woods Cruises for some time. (Attendees: I'll be emailing you our big group photo within 24 hours.)
The great comedy magician Doc Dixon performed an exclusive show for us (that's him with little Henry Woods, below), and Scott Horton was a panelist for our talent show and pitch contests (in the picture he's with Clint Russell and Paul Counts, giving someone an 8); that's ol' Woods (with the beard) with a couple of attendees:
I was thrilled to see that a solid 20 percent of attendees were Low Stress Options members, so of course we paused our festivities every weekday for a couple of minutes to take a look at our positions, and in classic low-stress fashion went right back to having a great time.
Now that all the world is doing it, it's time to give it another look:
