The Big Read |
Nine Thousand More U.S. Troops Head for the Middle East |
The U.S. military is dispatching roughly 9,000 troops aboard ships to the Middle East, as President Trump warned new Iran strikes could come. The group carries more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group. |
Three carriers could be in the region by late October, lifting the U.S. naval presence above 20,000 sailors and Marines. Trump has called a post-midterm escalation a viable option, after first saying the campaign would last weeks. |
Supreme Court Will Decide Whether Detained Immigrants Get Bond Hearings |
The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to review the bond-hearing policy, testing whether immigrants living in the U.S. can be held without a hearing during deportation fights. Most appeals courts have found the policy violates federal law, but two circuits ruled such detention is required. |
The test case involves Ricardo Aparecido Barbosa da Cunha, a Brazilian who sought asylum in 2016 and has never been charged with a crime. Administration lawyers call the split "an unworkable patchwork," and arguments are expected in the coming months. |
Controller Never Warned Amazon Jet of Tail Wind, NTSB Finds |
An air traffic controller failed to warn the Amazon pilots about possible strong tail winds before their cargo jet ran off a Miami runway Sept. 6, killing five. Minutes earlier, a controller had given a different flight a wind advisory with gusts up to 25 mph. |
The Boeing 767 overshot the runway by roughly 1,200 feet and hit a van carrying airplane cleaners, the preliminary NTSB report said. The two pilots had first flown together that day, and Amazon has since suspended its partnership with operator 21 Air. |

An IRS-approved rollover already exists that lets eligible investors move part of their 401(k), IRA, or TSP into a physical gold account — while potentially keeping its tax-advantaged status intact.

Deep Dive |
Will the Job Market Hold? Friday's Jobs Report Will Tell |
What it is: The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its September jobs report on Friday, and Wall Street expects 84,000 new jobs with the unemployment rate holding at 4.1%. That would follow a surprisingly strong August, when employers added 162,000 jobs, and the government also revised its job counts for earlier months higher than first reported. |
The detail: Payroll growth has averaged 80,000 a month in 2026 but swung wildly, from a loss of 156,000 jobs in February to a gain of 214,000 in March. Paychecks are cooling too, with average hourly earnings expected to rise 3.1% from a year earlier in September, down from around 4% at the start of the year. |
Why it matters: For job seekers, the picture is stable but tough, with one Allianz Trade economist noting that openings and hiring are both creeping down while finding new work stays hard. Worker confidence also hit a record low in September on Glassdoor's survey, the third time this year, as anxiety over job security, economic uncertainty and inflation mounts. |
What to watch: The key figure Friday is whether payrolls land near the 84,000 forecast, since a big miss in either direction would break the stable but unspectacular pattern economists describe. Also watch whether unemployment holds at 4.1%, a level near full employment, and whether wage growth keeps slowing from the roughly 4% pace seen in January. |
