The chart I'm about to share with you confirms something you already knew, but the extent of the problem may be even worse than you suspected.
Here it is:
The blue tower in this chart represents the ideological commitments of faculty at 55 elite universities. The dotted and dashed lines represent the U.S. House and Senate.
There is essentially no blue on the right-hand side.
Now the left will tell you this result is understandable: they are smarter than you, so that's why they're getting all the jobs. (Suddenly they believe in merit!)
What's actually happening is that everything they accuse others of is true of themselves: they believe in ideological conformity, they believe the university exists to push forward their social vision, and except in very rare circumstances they are not going to hire anyone unlike themselves.
There's an organization in the libertarian/conservative world that has an enormous endowment, and that uses some of the funds to host scholarly colloquia: 15 invited participants study a series of readings in advance, and then discuss them over the course of a couple of days at a nice hotel and while enjoying good food.
Fair enough. I've participated in some of these and they've been very enjoyable. But then something happened: instead of the colloquia being opportunities for frank discussion among the sliver of non-leftist academics, they started including some scholars on the other side in order to generate more vigorous discussion.
Now the point isn't whether that was a good or a bad idea. I can make a case for doing it either way. The point is this: if the left had an organization like this, not one dime would be spent inviting anyone like you or me. You can count on that. The thought would never cross their minds.
Here's where I'm going with this: understand that when you send your kids to an elite school, you're sending them to a lions' den that has curated itself very deliberately. These people aren't playing.
At the same time, I understand the people who say: if we don't send our kids to the elite schools, then we abandon the field to the worst people in society, and they get all the elite opportunities.
So I don't say: under no circumstances should anyone attend these institutions. We need to be clever as foxes about this. What I mean is, your kids need their heads on straight when they go, and they need to seek out dissident student organizations so the non-progressives can support each other and keep each other sane.
Or you can avoid the problem altogether: next week I'm driving one of my daughters from Florida to Pennsylvania (we're driving so she can have the car; I'll fly home) so she can attend Grove City College. Grove City is one of a handful of institutions to which I would entrust my children with no hesitation at all. She is going to flourish there.
If you haven't heard of it, look into it. It receives zero federal aid, it's run and staffed by normal people, it just celebrated its 150th year in existence, and it's consistently ranked as an excellent liberal arts college.

No young man who pursues this can be snookered by any "progressive" idiocy.
