Most people recognize me as the man in the leather jacket and the black v-neck t-shirts with jeans.
To my name I have one custom-fitted blue suit. It does look quite nice, if I may say so myself.
But here is the funny thing. I did not choose the suit.
...it chose me!
I was in Thailand at Affiliate World, catching up with contacts I had met in Vietnam, and I hailed an Uber, which in Thailand is sometimes a tuk-tuk, to get to the conference center.
The driver took a slight detour and said he wanted to show me something. So I agreed, which looking back was maybe not my best move.
We parked in front of a suit shop and he said, "this will take 5 minutes, but is very special."
Next thing I know I am standing in the middle of a tailor's shop surrounded by custom suits and racks of colored fabric. A well dressed man started showing me what they offered, asked if I wanted a fitting, and told me the prices.
In my head I had always assumed a custom suit ran into the thousands, which in the USA it often does.
The suit, a custom fitted shirt and trousers came to $200. Absurd.
So there I was in the middle of Thailand saying yes to something I had no interest in twenty minutes earlier. That suit has served me well at every event since where a suit was required.
Which brings me to why I am writing today.
I was not shopping for a suit. I was going to a conference.
Some of the best things I own arrived exactly that way. Sideways, on a day I was thinking about something else entirely. Which is why I am sending you this now, even though I know most of you opened this email expecting a story and nothing more.
